“The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”
Waimea Canyon, Kauai
Many Travelers? Some
Dubbed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” by Mark Twain, Kauai’s Waimea Canyon is about 10 miles long (16 km) and as much as 3,000-feet deep (900 m) in some parts. The 12-mile long Waimea River runs through the canyon.
Besides the sheer, awe-inspiring scale of Waimea Canyon, the views from the various lookouts that line the edge of the canyon are breathtaking. The colors on display in the canyon are magnificent – deep reds, bright greens, and startling purples - so don’t forget to bring a camera.
There are many hiking trails that lead into the canyon. Most trails are moderate in difficulty and can be muddy at times given the heavy rainfall in the area.
Visitors are able to follow the main road, Waimea Canyon Drive, around the perimeter of the canyon, although there are no gas stations along the road so be sure to fill up before heading out. At the end of the road lies Koke‘e State Park and the Kalalau Lookout.
Part of the 1,866-acre Waimea Canyon State Park, the canyon is about a 45-minute drive from Poipu and the hotels along the island’s south-facing shore. The park is open year round, and admission is free.
