A unique island destination
Bermuda, Bermuda

Dislikes: Hard to get around
Many Travelers? Some

Bermuda gets its character from two distinct traits; its mid-Atlantic location and its English heritage.

The location means that unlike the Caribbean, Bermuda is generally at its best in the summer, and it’s a viable weekend destination from the east coast of the USA.

Bermuda is filled with English character. From the unusually long Bermuda shorts worn with tall socks, to the yacht clubs and private golf courses. Many sights, such as St. George, revolve around Bermuda’s status as the first English settlement in the Caribbean area. However, this heritage means Bermuda lacks the exotic character of the Caribbean nations. The capital, Hamilton, is a pleasant, walkable town, but don’t be fooled - there is serious business conducted here. Bermuda’s tax haven status has led to it rivaling Lloyds of London as an insurance market.

There’s good golf and excellent scuba diving (both good reefs and wreck dives), and winter is a good time for both. You’re never far from the beach and there are endless beautiful coves to choose from. If you want a break from outdoor activities, there’s good shopping here. The locals are famously friendly, there is little poverty and very little crime.

For a small island, Bermuda is frustrating to navigate. This is partly due to the environmentally-driven lack of car rental and 35 km/h speed limit, and partly because the crescent shape of the island just makes distances longer. The most common modes of transport are public buses, taxis and scooter rental.

Things are expensive here and it’s not a great choice for budget travelers. It’s small size and lack of neighboring islands favor visits of up to a week.

Bermuda is a sunny destination, with a mild climate and no specific rainy season. Unlike the Caribbean, here winter is the low season and the best time to get deals. Temperatures in winter are mild (in the 60s), so while that won’t work for a beach vacation it’s still fine for golf or general R&R. Daytime temperatures in the summer are typically mid-80s, with hurricane season running from June-November.
