Modern city teeming with history and culture
Berlin, Germany

Dislikes: Big city can be confusing to navigate
Many Travelers? Some

While the museums, theater, opera and parks are wonderful, it is the historical sights that draw travelers to Berlin. This was formerly Ground Zero of the Cold War, and famous sights from that era include Checkpoint Charlie (the former border crossing between East and West Berlin) and some remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall (which separated East and West Berlin).

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a moving tribute to the destruction caused by World War II, and the Reichstag (the German Parliament building) is a gorgeously redone building topped with a spectacular glass dome. There are many types of tours available (biking, walking, bus), and they are a good place to start exploring the vast city of Berlin.

Though Berlin is a popular tourist destination, the city is big enough that it rarely feels like it’s overflowing with travelers. With historical sites and architecture spanning hundreds of years, the city tells a story all its own.

Nightlife in Berlin is epic, and pretty much whatever you’re into, it’s here. Ironically, a lot of the great nightlife is in what was formerly drab, communist East Berlin.

Accommodation options span all budget ranges and styles. Dining options also run the gamut, with many visitors preferring something other than traditional German food.

Other than the usual big-city issues, Berlin offers a welcoming atmosphere for travelers. While the locals are friendly, this is a large city and it’s important to remember basic safety tips (don’t walk alone at night, keep your valuables close to you, or locked up in a safe).

Nobody comes to Berlin for the great weather. It’s very cold in the winter, and rain can fall throughout the year. May through October is generally the best time to go, though be aware that Germans collectively go on vacation in August.

Give Berlin a week if you can, though more time could be spent exploring all the area has to offer.
