Among the world's most amazing cities
Rome, Italy

Dislikes: Expensive, dirty, graffiti, crowded in summer
Many Travelers? Huge Tourist Crowds

Travelers come to Rome to see epic historical and religious sites, and to enjoy the fantastic food and wonderful people of this amazing city. This is one of the world's great cities and should rank high on the list of just about any traveler. Here in Rome are the ruins of the ancient Coliseum, and the Vatican with the stunning Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica & Square.

Rome's Coliseum, with an estimated two million visitors every year, is one of the most famous and visited structures in the world. The Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums offer a stupendous collection of art and treasure; there's nothing like them. There are dozens of archeological sights from ancient Rome; you could spend days exploring here.

The Italians have a marvelous zest for life, and are part of the attraction of visiting this wonderful country. Visitors will enjoy fantastic Italian cuisine and shopping that caters to all budgets.

Costs tend to be high in Rome for what you get, but one can find many options including B&B's and luxury hotels. Budget travelers may not want to linger. Honeymooners or those on a romantic getaway will love a few days in Rome.

Rome is generally safe and presents few hassles to the traveler. Visitors should avoid Termini area at night and always be on the lookout for pick pockets and beggars, especially in the main tourist areas and on buses. Most people speak English. Females traveling alone may get unwanted attention from males.

Although spread out, Rome is relatively easy to navigate. It has a great transport system and friendly locals are always willing to point you in the right direction. Driving is not recommended for visitors.

The most comfortable and least crowded times to visit are April, May and October, when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller. The summer months are less appealing due to the heat and crowds. In August the Italians collectively go on vacation and it's not a great time to visit. The winter is the cheapest and least crowded if visitors are willing to get out their umbrellas and coats. December is a special time here, with various Christmas displays and markets.

Rome can be exhausting and there are elements that can be frustrating to some: crowds, car horns at all hours, countless motorbikes and graffiti. It is worth it for the visitor to make reservations in advance, get advance tickets online before leaving home, and plan time to rest at sidewalk cafes and to see a few hidden gems that are less visited. For travelers with an adventurous spirit and a good pair of walking shoes, the splendors of ancient Rome will not disappoint.
